Wednesday.

The first test.

I was alone again, walking down a dark hallway that I didn’t even know existed until twenty minutes ago.

For all I knew, there was gonna be a dragon at the end of it, waiting to do battle.

Because I’m a wizard.

I turned the corner and saw another room with a single school desk at the center of it.

A red ninja waved at me as I entered the room.

“Hello! You must be here for the test!” the ninja said all jolly. I could tell from her voice that she was a girl.

I nodded.

“Nice beard,” she said, her eyes smiling behind her mask.

“Thanks,” I said. “So… what do I have to do for this test?”

The girl led me to the school desk. “Have a seat,” she said. “And then you can get started.”

I sat carefully just in case the desk was a test.

Nope.

Just a regular desk.

The girl walked to the side of the room and got a single sheet of paper with a pencil. And then she brought them over and placed the school supplies in front of me.

“Wait, what kind of test is this?” I asked.

“It’s a spelling test,” she said.

“Are you kidding me right now?” I asked. “If I wanna join the red ninja clan, I have to pass a spelling test? What is this? Second grade?”

“A spelling test plus two other tests!” the girl said. “The red ninja clan doesn’t want dumb ninjas!”

Thank goodness it wasn’t a math test.

“Fine,” I said. “Let’s get this over with…”

The girl stood in front of me and listed off fifty words that I had to spell correctly.
